Brown color with ruby tones.
Fruitiness like figs and dates with heavy malt and a whiff of alcohol.
Some complex aromas like molasses and honey and nutmeg seem to be present.

Legs of syrup lacing on run down the glass.
Deep taste with some biting hops (68 IBU's).
Medium to full malty mouth feel with a slight alcohol bite.

Whoa!  Strap yourself to your barstool!

Treating someone to their first experience at WOB, we kept coming back to the discussion this particular item.  I have sampled it from tap in the past, but never enough to have for a review.  So I ordered the beertendress to return with a bottle of this wild canine of brews.  And the beast from within the bottle was unleashed.  We all sipped  and sampled..one of us a bit more than the others. And the beast came out.  It was a "you-have-to-be-there" experience.

Needless to say, we all enjoyed it immensely.  Their website notes that this brew can be cellared for up to 10 years! That puts the Grand in the Grand Cru although the designation is usually reserved for the birthplace of wines.

One final word of caution:
This one rang in at around one dollar per ABV when ordered at the World of Beer in Viera, FL. But you'll find it's worth every penny!

Tawny, unfiltered golden color.
Banana and some clove on the nose.
Crisp white head three fingered covers to bottom of glass.

The history of this beer goes back to 1260 AD. That means, they know how to make beer, old school. Just a simple, easy, breezy wheat indulgence.  It's like drinking a loaf of bread in a glass!

This really hit the spot this evening.  I had worked up a thirst trying to select a draught that hadn't recently had the keg blown.  After five shutouts, I just picked it at random and viola'.  Lady luck was in the house.

It's smooth and almost creamy texture goes down easily on a hot summer night like tonight!

Deep brown cola color.
Sweet pineapple and vanilla aroma with slight earthy funk on the nose.

I scored two of these beauties on a trip to Colorado as part of a near $200 extravaganza of beer shopping.

As a fairly new addition to the Odell lineup, Saboteur lives up to it's name by tantalizingly drawing you near with sumptuously sweet pineapple and vanilla flavors.  Then it perpetrates its diabolical plan by turning sour to the taste as you finish the sip.  In the world of espionage, a saboteur's modus operandi is attempting to conceal their identities because of the consequences of their actions.  This is how this ale gets the job done.

The bottle label  introduces you to the fact that Brettanomyces, (the bane of a vintner's existence), is in the batch.  Hence the name 'Brett' in the ale's name.  Brett is typically found in Lambic or gueuze, giving them a sour profile.  It has the same effect on Saboteur, by design.  Saboteur is aged in oak barrels and then conditioned 100% in each bottle.

Tricky little ale that will please, as it performs its artful seduction on your senses. Don't fight it when a Saboteur sneaks up on you. At 10% ABV, you will be infiltrated.  Resistance is futile.

Ah ha! That crazy eyed skull caught my attention while strolling down the liquor warehouse Memorial Day weekend.  I recognized that logo from a trip I made to Atlanta in the 1990's.  There was a joint called the Vortex that served up hamburgers about two dozen ways, offered around 100 different beers and had a profound amount of whiskeys.  That was it.  A simple formula.  Oh yeah, they had the craziest shit hanging off of the walls and ceilings.

So after a little digging on the internet, I discovered they are still in business with about three establishments now.  The original location is gone; the one where we stood in a line outside in the cold to get one of the 20 tables available.  It was worth the wait.  The food and bar were worth shivering a bit for and it certainly lived up to the hype at that time.

The Vortex is still serving the same type of  food and grog in their newer eclectic atmosphere restaurants.  They even sport the same psycho skull logo.  And much to my delight, there is a menu, a beer menu to be more specific that notes this amber ale is the "house brew". Check it out on page 2 of their "Booze Menu".

I loved them then, and love them more now, for growing in Atlanta and now reaching out with this amber ale.  Long live the Vortex!

Brooklyn has redefined the term English Pale Ale to come up with an English Light Dinner Ale, or Luncheon Ale. Or Summer ale! Bother!  What ever you call it, get some of this for the summertime pool and beach outings.  Its light airyness makes it very very easy to session and its flavor will bring you back for more.

We had a big move over the Memorial Day holiday and this easy to drink brew went down easy and was refreshing.

So get a move-on and go try it now!

Honey amber color; translucent.
Rye, malt and delicious hops aromas permeate.
Two fingered head that is slightly off white and lasts to the end.
Leaves streaks and dots of lace.
Rich malt and zippy hops flavor with a nice dry rye after note.
Nice amount of carbonation.
Solid, medium bodied mouth feel. Easy to drink.

Rye and pale ale.  A great combination if done right. Terrapin done it right.

Let's dispense with the bad puns to get them out of the way.

• You'll want to savor this ale and take it slow.
• You'll be happy that you don't have to shell out a lot for this tasty brew.
• Don't fear the turtle, he is your friend in this case.

Okay, do try this rye ale. It's more wry than my droll sense of humor.  It has a great APA character, even if they didn't add 10% rye to the batch.  The malts and hops are nicely balanced.  They are easily picked out in the nose and the taste.  Then comes that dry shot of rye which finishes each sip quite smoothly.

Of note, this is their first beer produced from 2002.  No small feat that less than one year into production it won the 2002 GABF gold medal for the American Pale Ale category.  That alone should make you crawl to the store for some. There were 93 entries in the category.  Got your attention yet?

So if you're looking for a little something more from your average pale ale, try this one.  Next time you see some, snap it up.

Another offering from the "World's Oldest Brewery."  This crystal clear wheat or kristall weissbier is just the thing for a 93 degree day.  But don't let it get warm.  The flavors open up and though they aren't distracting, the beer tastes best when chilly.  It will not weigh you down in the least.

Nearly as good as its big brother the hefe, Kristall Weissbier is perfect for warm days lazing by the pool.  I know from experience!

Brownish red upon the pour but inky black in the glass with a tall stiff tan head that tantalizes.  The chocolate/coffee flavors bops your tongue about five to ten seconds after each sip.  Simply delicious.  At a robust 8.5% ABV you too will fade to black as I did on this scorcher of a day.

Such wonderful goodness from the heart of Colorado at the Left Hand Brewing Company.  Wow!  Gonna make sure to get more of this on the next trip to the store.

Come to think of it, I've never yet reviewed a Heineken!  Goodness knows that I have had more than a couple of these over the years. And of all places to try one; on a plane at 37,000 feet.  Returning from Beer Mecca Colorado, I asked the good flight attendant what manner of malt beverages were available. I listened closely with my pressure plugged ears as she yammered out the routine.  Come on, repeat the litany with me, won't you? We all know it by heart.........Bud,  Bud Light,  Miller,  Miller Light,  Coors,  Coors Light..... 

...(sigh!)

Every cocktail waitress and bartender knows that drill.  But then, she stammered and blinked. "Wait! I think we have some Heineken." Well, that was fine by me.  Now we are getting somewhere.  It occurred to me I have been hounded by a few readers that Heineken has not yet made the crypts list.  A favorite staple from the old days when it was considered the finest of imports to our dull American palates. Let's give it a go.

"Sure! I'll have one of those, please." came my response.  She swiped my credit card and returned shortly with the little green can.  It must have been kept on the wing of the plane, because the can was undeniably cold.  Chilly in my bony hand, it was poured in small measures into the "frosted-looking" plastic cup. Muahaha.

With a crisp and refreshing first sip, I sank down into my seat, stretched out my legs and savored the entire 12 ounces.  Ahhh, refreshment.  All this bliss and a bag of chips.

Thanks to all of you who prodded me to review.  It beat the alternatives.

Bright sweet flavor of pineapple.
No head to speak of as it rose and settled immediately.

Fruit beers. Where does one begin? This was mama Reaper's choice for Mothers Day and so we began the experiment.

Oddly, first it opens like a wine, by unwrapping the foil around the neck with a bartender's tool.  Next, it opens like a beer, using the cap prying portion of the tool.  Lastly, it opens like a wine again by using the corkscrew to pull the plug from the bottle's neck. Makes you worn out by the time it is poured.

This Lambic poured a yellow color with the slightest of a green tinge.  It smelled sweet like soda-pop but without the fizziness. An interesting sweet, low alcohol imbibement for the wife on her day.  She approved.  I didn't get it, but no matter.

So long as mama's happy, then everybody's happy.

I loved the Stille Nacht from this brewer. Just loved it.  The Ara Bier, however...well, let's just start by saying it is a different breed.  It really is quite nice, sort of like a fine champagne more than a beer.  More than a traditional beer.  You just have to get past the happy happy bubbles.

It is fizzy and bubbly and tart and dry. It tickles the tongue with all the effervescence.  But hold on.  It's not bad, just different than anything you'd expect.  I was celebrating my birthday, so why not with a faux champagne.

Now then, I am really intrigued to try their other offerings.  No preconceived notions next time.

After completing my sampling notes, I read elsewhere that others have pretty much passed on this one.  But thier reviews were mostly from a bottle.  I found that this was pleasant enough on tap and while not exactly memorable, it wasn't that bad.  It is an easy session drinker as it should be, for a summer style ale.

The third brew in the "Tour de Mexico", this Cinco de Mayo.  Here's one beer that I have never before tasted.  It had a bright citrus, lemony taste which was different, but not unpleasant.  While the beer as a whole is not stellar, it has merit as a refreshing beach, boat or poolside chugger.

Bottle number two on the "Tour de Mexico" from World of Beer this May the 5th.  Modelo Especial is a decent clear bottled 'yellow' lager from Mexico.  Light and refreshing, I cannot find fault with any of its characteristics.  Equally said, there is nothing remarkable that sets it apart from other clear glass bottled yellow beers.  

At 4.4% ABV, it won't weigh you down, and it doesn't fill you up, either.

Happy Cinco de Mayo!  The next several reviews are from a "Tour de Mexico" offering from World of Beer.  The first up in the bucket of five, Negra Modelo.  I have had this before and remembered it was uniquely different from most Mexican beer, in that it was not a 'yellow' beer.  Negra Modelo has a deep brown color that you do not find in many "south of the border" beers. Even the bottle is brown!

Boldly different and more flavorful, this is a good malty choice to start with on this 5th of May.  For you history buffs; while Cinco de Mayo is the most important national day of celebration in Mexico, it is not their day of independence.  It commemorates the Mexican army's beat down of the French army at Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862.

Hunt one of these down, then kill it. No shotgun necessary.

Being an IPA fan, there is not ususally much to a pale ale that will conjure up the tastes of the hops my palate desires.  But this refreshing little gem was right in the zone.  I found that it was easy enough to session while giving a straight up approach to what a pale ale should be.  I left my preconceived notions of IPA's out of it after the second sip.

See what a good example of an American Pale Ale can be with Southern Tier. Make that an extraordinary example.

Dark brown color.
Roasty malt aromas with caramelized candy sweet smell..
Slightly less than one finger of foamy tan head.
Not much head retention, but there are scant 'legs' of lace like in distilled products.
Dried fruity taste with immediate bit of sourness that immediately smooths to maple sweetness.
More grassy sweetness from the birch syrup and a slight nutty finish with a small bite of hops.
Medium carbonation.
Medium bodied mouth feel. Very smooth and balanced.

Good things happen when good people come together with a passion for beer.  Ken Grossman and Sam Calagione of Sierra Nevada and Dogfish Head breweries have come up with this collaborative strong ale.  Made from exotic things such as pure maple syrup from Sam's family farm in Massachusetts and estate barley grown by Ken's "farm" at the brewery in Chico.  Not your ordinary ingredients in beers and ales, but we aren't talking about your ordinary brewers here.

The counterpart to this brew was "Limb and Life", made from the second runnings and brewed to an ABV of 5%, or half that of its bigger brother.  Limb and Life was available in select locations on tap and meant to be the session ale whereas Life and Limb was meant to be sipped.  I was fortunate to be in the store when their one and only carton of Life and Limb was opened.  I have been relishing sampling this bottle for several months now.

This ale has a unique taste.  I am glad to have aged it for several months so all those flavors could commingle.  It would make a wonderful after dinner sipper.  It goes equally well on a sunny, lazy Sunday afternoon, which is how the gang and I enjoyed it.

As The Reaper,  it's my job to know about life and limb, but it appears these two beer maestros were able to drop some knowledge on me with their "Life and Limb"  Muahahaha.  See if you can't still get your hands on this while it may still be available.

Malts in the background with bright hops at the end.
Active nucleated carbonation.
Medium bodied.
