Some dark brown goodness lies in wait for you inside this bottle. I was a bit skeptical and thought that Yuengling might only be adept at lagers, but no! This may not be a heady european porter but it holds up on its own. There is a silky smoothness and solid malt tones at the end of each sip. In all, a solid session porter drink, if you prefer your brew on the dark side!

"Brewed Expressly for Tavern & Family Trade" is printed on the label. My family will have to go down to the tavern, because I'm not trading with them! Get your own!

One look at the label and I knew it would be good. This truly 'dead soldier', one Bvt. Maj. Gen. Joshua Laurence Chamberlain was also once the Governor of Maine (1866-70), and President of Bowdoin College (1871-85). Oh yeah...he is also a Medal of Honor recipient. Yawn. I suppose that's a pretty nice resume. But personally, I think that foam-catcher 'stache is his most impressive accomplishment. Just take a look at that bad-ass mustache!

Better still were the liquid contents under "The Little Round Top" on the bottle. For you Civil War history buffs out there, this is the famous Gen. Chamberlain that held off the Alabama Regiment on the left flank at Gettysburg. He thinned out the men of the 20th Maine to hold the line for control of the hill. Speaking of thin, there is nothing thin about this ale. It is as solid in taste as the soldier it is named after.

So keep your powder dry and defend your thirst...Lord knows there were plenty of 'dead soldiers' at the Battle of Gettysburg.

Belgian-influenced pale ale – go figure in Stillwater you’d think it would be influenced by some square headed Norwegian but they don’t know crap about beer. But I speak from ignorance – my wife is Norwegian.

Anyway – all the farmer’s daughter jokes aside – this farm girl is no slouch and tastes shall I dare say fabulous. Blue Moon move over. Great summer outdoor beer – I had six before I knew it in my backyard last Sunday avoiding the crowd at Lumberjack Days. They don’t sell liquor in this lousy state on Sunday (in stores) so I was forced to catch a ride downtown to consume three more at me favorite tavern before the fireworks.

You must try one, or twelve of these before the Reaper comes calling on you for real!

UPDATE 7/14/2010 - My two cents - - -The Grim Reaper agrees with TK.  This is simply a great summer ale that you can open, empty, rinse and repeat.  I thought it had quite good character for a Belgian style Farmhouse ale and was surprised at how much I wished there was another.  Someday, I hope to sample more of this Minnesota bottled gold.

Yup. It's Bud. And it's light. We could end the post right here.

Yeah, it's not my drink of choice, but tonight it proved it could be better than expected. Bear with me. So it's a light beer and not long on taste. But when your neighbor shows up at your door at the end of the day and plugs one of these in your paw, what are you gonna do? Say no? I think not.

It was just the attitude adjustment needed. Also, they go down easy, especially when sharing with friends. And it was surprising how many friends kept showing up on the front lawn...on a Monday night! That's not just drinkability (TM) but it's also friendability.

Stone Cold Fact: Bud Light is now the largest produced of all beers in the AB lineup, out selling even Budweiser.

Friends and Bud Light washed the rest of the day's troubles away.

Update 7/30/09 --- This Bud's for you, Mr. Bartender-in-Chief!
It would appear that our President must have read my blog. It seems he chose a Bud Light as his beer of choice for tonight's attitude adjustment hour, or the "Beer Summit", as the press referred to the event. Hmmmm? Before we begin, an announcement. This review will be the 99th in the series thus far. That means, and you knew this was coming...There's 99 bottles of beer on the wall!" We'll here's to that achievement, and the fact that I have kept my promise to you of passing them into the great beyond, one beer at-a-time. Now back to the blog..............

The beer that's half porter and half pilsner. Maybe even, half alligator and half crocodile.

I used to drink this years back; just like me it's been around a while. You'll find it in distinctively ginormous 32 oz. jugs which will add to your experience. Go ahead, make friends. It's like a pass-around pack! Have some now and have some later with the screw on metal top! Novel idea, though Matt's has had many. Like their "beer ball" in the 70's & 80's. The first of the trend towards mini-kegs.

The "Mud's" container makes you want to hook your pointer finger in the loop and sling it on your shoulder for a swig, moonshine style! Hoo boy! When you're all done with the beer, just stuff some posies in the jug, lay out yer best gingham table cloth, and you gotch yerself a dandy table centerpiece fer Sunday dinner!

As for the beer itself, it is a good as I remembered. Sweet upfront with a bit of the gator bite at the finish. A good drinker all around. And as said before, quite a novel dispenser for the Friday night poker/smoker with your gang.

What is not exactly a beer and not exactly a malt liquor and not exactly a wine cooler? I don't know, but this would come pretty close to describing the experience. That said, it was refreshing; a real change from straight up beer.

Perhaps the moon and stars were aligned just right this evening, but it was truly good and I plan to get some more of this berry nectar. Even Mrs. Reaper enjoyed it. I guess I have a sweet tooth for it myself.

The beer from yesteryear that has more mottos than anybody else. "The Beer That Made Milwaukee Famous" and "Go for the Gusto!" are just a couple of examples I can recall when this stalwart of a beer fought alongside Pabst, Bud, Miller, Ballantine, Schaefer and Piels for a slice of the American market.

Yes friends, as said before, everything old is new again. Used to be the country was filled with breweries competing for market share. I didn't mention Rheingold, Hamms, Carling Black Label, Stroh's or countless others trying to make it on the scene. Does any of this sound familiar to you...like today's 'micro'-breweries, perhaps??? Hmm? I digress.

Stone Cold Fact: In 1902, Schlitz eclipsed Pabst for world beer output.

We'll I thought I had buried Schlitz years ago. But there it was, chillin' in the fridge of the jumbo liquor warehouse with a 'toe-tag' proclaiming $5.99 for the 'sixer. This used to be a staple at the Reaper's crypt in the 70's, so swoop! Under my radius and ulna it went, (humerus me, okay?)

It seems that the ghost of Jos. Schlitz is still alive, albeit in a reincarnated form. With thanks to Pabst, since 1999 the brand remains solid, and this was after Stroh's had previously acquired the Schlitz name in 1982. And Pabst has an agreement with Miller to produce it in their Texas plant alongside PBR! That was like reviewing the family tree with relatives at the funeral home! It just goes to show that you can't keep a good name down.

After all this, what lies in store for the future of Schlitz? According to their website, "Not 21 Yet? Hang on to your youth while you can. We'll be around when you're ready." Apparently the brand's still sound, at least for awhile. And lest you think this is just another old-man's brew, let us pause to give some 'props' to Jos. A. Schlitz for some of the greatest innovations in beer history. Namely...

• the brown glass bottle ~ to prevent spoilage
  
• the "pop-top" for cans ~ don't need a church-key
  
• the 7 oz. pony sized or "Little Joe" ~ for when you're thirsty
• the 24 oz. "Tall Boy" can ~ for when you're thirsty-er
  

They have served the beer industry well! So, "Move Up To Schlitz, Mr. HopKiss, and Grab Some Gusto, 'Cause When You're Out Of Schlitz, You're Out OF Beer!"

Rusty brown and translucent in color.
Hop aroma, hop taste with malt, hop finish.

Hops that go 'pop' in your mouth. At 41 IBU's they are not subtle, but not overpowering. A good dash of roasty malted flavor finishes the balance. This English style pale ale had a head that lasted to the end of the glass and left some remarkable lacy goodness.

What I really enjoyed most is the picture of a gargoyle on the finely painted bottle. It says, "...a fearsome figure carved from stone that has powers to ward off evil spirits." We'll I have never been so insulted...I may go by "The Reaper" but I'm far from evil. And it doesn't scare me one bit. Actually judging from the photo above, I bested that gargoyle. Muhaa-haa! Nice try...

It is the first Stone I've ever had, but listen up...Gargoyles, the Reaper hereby officially places you on notice. I will be claiming more of these in the future, for sure.

Souffle like head. Not a usual lager; the yeast was slightly detectable. The biggest surprise was the nice after-beer buzz. I discovered it is just a scoch under the 6% mark. Not bad, not bad at all considering this is a beer from the heart of the wine universe. Nicely done. An all around good beer.

In case you were wondering, the 1664 moniker comes from the founding year of the original brewery. This brew really took off after WWII. Call them frogs, surrender monkeys or whatever, but when it comes to food, fashion and fine beverages, the French make love not war. Viva' la résistance!

Genesis: In the beginning there was nothing. God said, "Let there be light!" And there was light...And God saw that it was good.

Let me tell you it was more than good, it was damn good! I can't think of a better way sit back on a Saturday, (my apologies to the Sabbath and all that.) I enjoyed this from the comfort of my crypt's back porch, overlooking the bone yard, knowing full well this ale would make a proud addition to the mausoleum.

According to the label and website, this is the first effort put forth from He'Brew. Just can't wait to try it's darker cousin 'Messiah Bold' that's hanging out in my mortuary fridge, alongside their 'Lenny Bruce' commemorative ale. The 'Lenny' suggestion came from my new friend Zak, at Shmaltz, via a blog comment here, at alesfromthecrypt.blogspot.com (shameless plug for me, muahahahahaaaa!).

But back to the Genesis...this ale had a perfect balance of maltiness and hops. And, there was a nice hoppy bite at the end of each sip. In addition, it had wonderful floral hop scent that wafted up into my skull cavity as each sip (gulp) was savored.

Get yourself some religion my friends and enjoy your own pint. Back to resting my bones.

"One love, one heart, let's get together and feel alright." Takes me back to the islands, mon'. Dis is de beer of Jamaica! Hooray beer! ®

Good drinker on hot sultry days and Caribbean nights for that matter. I'm speaking from experience. That buffalo soldier on the right is 26 years in the grave; exported straight from the island. I wanted to see what has changed, so its empty remains were exhumed from the crypt. Aside from the "imported" label on the recently deceased fellow, it seems they haven't messed with success in over 75 years. The chubby painted bottles seem to slip neatly into my bony phalanges.

This is one of the best Jamaican exports along with Bob Marley, that Olympic bobsled team and a certain unmentionable earthly crop, (not necessarily in any particular order.) So my friends, put some reggae music in your earbuds and enjoy some of this cool running lagered "brain wash". You'll be whisked away to the islands in no time at all. Peace out.

Where to begin? I want a moment to wipe away a tear...

This beer is magnificent. I cannot find the words to describe it, but will give it a try...(sniff, ah Reaper, compose yourself, now.)

A little history first. This beer is brewed for Christmas by De Dolle. Suffice to say, I encourage you to read what they have to say about their own creation on their website.

This beer has been hanging out in the chiller for several weeks now and was treated with the respect of a first time science experiment. Popping the top of the 2008 vintage cap produced what can be described only as a mini-spontaneous fermentation. A wispy puff of thick beer 'smoke' brought tingles of anticipation. The pour caused a cascading effect that saw an upper creamy head appear followed underneath by active rolling carbonation.

The suspended particles were an interesting curiosity that, (dare I say?), frightened even me. I thought of filtering it on the pour, but thought again and instead was rewarded with specks of detritus hanging in the everlasting foamy head. In other words, how shall I say? I know........what makes a doughnut even better? DOH, sprinkles!!!

It is to date the highest ABV sampled, ringing in at 12%. As you know that can haunt the flavor by overpowering it with a distinct alcohol aftertaste, but not here. Not even a hint of it.

The rich, sweet & savory body rolls over your taste buds like a malty, hoppy, fruity river of goodness! A nice bounce of hops at the end of the sip smooths our the candy-like sweetness. It's not to be gulped or even drunk by the 6-pack at a time, but sampled by the sip. I would like to think that Silent Night was brewed more to expand your mind than to expand your waistline, so pace yourself with these, won't you?

One or two bottles will probably induce an out of the body experience. And at 12% ABV, you'll want a designated driver, else I will see you sooner rather than later, muhahahaa muhaahaaahaa.

I should have reviewed this in the spring with my "Brews from Yesterbeer" series. Sadly I must report...Look what they've done to my song, Ma!

This used to be " THE " import back-in-the-day. So much so, Löwenbräu allowed it to be brewed in America under strict license agreements. They just couldn't keep up with the demand from the US in the Motherland. We'll of course we all know now, once it was over produced on US soil, we Americans naturally ruined it. Else, we grew tired of its 'non-import' status. So in the end, Löwenbräu pulled the plug and returned it to Germany once more.

Apparently it wasn't all the fuss we made it out to be. My nostalgia for it went right out of the casket after just one. How sad. At least it's once again, getting Reinheitsgebot German purity law respect. Let's hope for a speedy recovery.

Got this at a small party the other evening. When asked for a beverage and told there was no beer, (how sad), I spotted one of these in the fridge. Well, actually there were several. Wanting to slake my thirst with something in a brown bottle, I asked for a 'church key' with which to decapitate the vessel, releasing the alcoholic apple nectar awaiting inside. Although my taste buds were jonesing for something hoppy, it was enjoyable nonetheless. Decidedly different, and it is a great alternative for refreshing your palate.

And for you guys out there thinking that hard cider is a 'ladies only' drink, you only need be reminded that Magner's sponsors the Celtic Rugby Union. Those guys take a pounding and that's tough enough for The Reaper. It should be tough enough for you too.

Speaking of pounding, I read on their website that the parent company is Bulmers of Ireland, renown for pounding different kinds of Irish fruit into hard cider submission. Pound one for yourself and see.

Lovely little brew concealed in the stubby brown glass bottle. Everything on the uber green label, (and the "fresh seal" cap too), screams California eco-friendly. The "Purest Ingredients" and abundance of hops imagry on the label let you know you're in for some of Mother Nature's finest ingredients. As you know, I the Reaper really dig that, which is from the earth.

Definitely do not miss out on the experience...you will want to try one of these.

Ancient, mysterious intrigue from the Orient. Look closely at the background of the label and you'll see the White Ale letters blending in, ninja like, indeed! Extraordinary website that gives an excellent overview of this company's heritage. Do indulge a few minutes and while there, peruse the history tab. Quite interesting.

This quiet little owl is done up in Japan, but in a Belgian wit style. Light, remarkably clear with a clean refreshing taste. Normally, wit's are not my cup of tea, but I would definitely give this a go, again.

Try it and see if you 'give a hoot' about it.

Wow, good fun! Step right up and drink one of these 22 ounce babies and see if you don't become part of the side show! It is a bit bitter with the high ABV rating and the hearty hops. But, if you can get past it, you'll be laughing like one of the clowns in the carnival. I enjoyed it...Blockhead is a great curiosity.

This beer has a real original package label that should act as a warning for the timid and mild of heart. Try one and see if you aren't compelled to run away with the circus. It's like pounding a nail into your skull...but in a fun way!

Dark amber brown color.
Nicely roasted malted barley aroma.
Decent foaming head with strings of lacing.
Medium bodied mouth feel. 

Grim Reaper's Eulogy
Liked this beer....and then it occurred to me! Since being knee high to a grasshopper, I've been a lifelong Yankees fan! Oh the humiliation of the 1955 World Series. It's when the Dodgers reached back and finally won a series from my beloved Yankees. Can't win 'em all. How sad. But this ale put me in a good mood. And it has a baseball on the label. Let's see...baseball, apple pie and Brooklyn Beer. Let's hear it for the USA!

So let's hear it for 'dem bums at Brooklyn Brewery. They certainly hit one outta' da' ballpark with this finely crafted ale. Good thing that I won't have to wait 'till next year to get another one of these great beers.
